Honeywell is peering into the future of wearable technology with a Google Glass prototype application. The app, which is still very much in development, aims to connect flight attendants with an aircraft’s cabin systems through Honeywell’s Ovation Select Cabin Management System. Through Google Glass, the app gives flight attendants a hands-free way to perform routine tasks around the cabin, such as raising or lowering the shades or dimming the lights.

The power of new-product introductions to stimulate market demand across business aviation has been proven time and again. Case in point: Cessna Aircraft.

Fifty percent of the models it will deliver during the next two years are aircraft that were certified within just the last 12 months, such as the Citation Latitude and the CJ3A. Observes Cessna CEO Scott Ernest: “It’s important to keep our [product development] pipeline full.”

Ernest has especially high expectations for the Citation Latitude, which didn’t even exist on paper three years ago. The midsize-category jet certainly is a different product for Cessna, with its wide, stand-up cabin.

Winglet Technology has completed testing its new elliptical winglets on the Cessna Citation Sovereign. It is collaborating with the Citation service center network on the project and released test results for the $395,000 kit (uninstalled) today at NBAA 2014.

Business aircraft activity in the U.S. has been climbing for the past 10 straight months and is set to continue this trend in the fourth quarter, according to aviation services company Argus. In fact, the company is predicting that flying in the quarter will rise 0.7 percent year-over-year, which would result in this year besting 2013 by 1.5 percent and making 2014 the “most robust” year for flight activity since 2008.

As expected, the mood at the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) Convention & Exhibition (Oct. 21-23) is buoyant, and for good reason; the sector continues to show measureable signs of recovery. Better still, the long-term outlook is positive, with numbers to support a general sense of cautious optimism.

But the optimism isn’t universal. Some industry veterans who have observed previous business aviation cycles come and go point out that some OEMs were still shrinking their workforce as recently as several months ago. They believe the current recovery, albeit in the early stages, is fragile and remains susceptible to economic headwinds that could adversely affect the market for new business jets.

Airbus has launched a new VIP cabin concept called Summit, initially for the A330-200, which features a VIP section at the front of the cabin and airline-style seating at the rear.

The Airbus ACJ330 Summit features a bedroom at the front, followed by an office, a conference and dining room and a working area, and then airline-style first-class and economy seating at the rear.

FAA deputy associate administrator John Hickey handed Embraer Executive Jets president Marco Túlio Pellegrini the FAA type certificate for the fly-by-wire Legacy 500 this afternoon at the NBAA Convention in Orlando, Fla. The U.S. approval comes just two months after the super-midsize jet earned authorization from Brazil’s civil aviation authority.
