New Citation M2 ready for 'wing mate'

The first production unit of the new Citation M2 has reached the significant milestone of wing and fuselage mating. Certification is expected in the second half of 2013.

“The M2 program is progressing well, and we are all looking forward to advancing to the certification process and starting customer deliveries,” said Dick Friesen, Cessna value stream manager for the Mustang and M2 in Independence, Kansas. “This is the moment when we can see an aircraft take shape, and we hope it is equally exciting for our customers who want to start flying their M2.”

Wing mating is a critical juncture in the production process as it allows the team to start the engine installation phase. Wing mating also prepares the aircraft for the beginning of functional testing of the aircraft systems including avionics, hydraulics and flight controls.

The M2 was developed with input from the already strong Mustang customer base, and the engineering present in this aircraft reflects customers’ desires – resulting in a larger and faster jet with a greater range. Equipped with Williams International engines and 1965lbs of thrust, the M2 has a maximum cruising speed of 400ktas. Requiring a mere 3,250 feet for take off and landing, the M2 allows access to some of the world’s premier destinations where many other business aircraft are unable to venture.

Unlike any other business jet, the M2 is fitted by Cessna’s proprietary Intrinzic™ Flight Deck powered by Garmin G3000 avionics. The ergonomically designed passenger cabin is fully equipped for seven passengers and boasts a 1,300nm (1496m) flight range. Upon completion the M2 is expected to be certified for a maximum altitude of 41,000 feet.

The M2 is one of six new Cessna products to hit the market in 2013. The M2 is joined by the new Citation X and the new Citation Sovereign – aircraft that recently celebrated a production rollout and first production rollout, respectively. On the single engine side, the high-powered Grand Caravan EX entered service in December of 2012, the TTx had its first production flight in March, and the Jet-A fueled Turbo Skylane JT-A is in production line flow.

Cessna’s new Citation Sovereign recently made its first production flight

Wednesday, May 1st, 2013

WICHITA, Kan., April 30, 2013 — Cessna’s new Citation Sovereign recently made its first production flight. Cessna Aircraft Company, a Textron Inc. (NYSE:TXT) company, announced the program last year. The flight of the new Sovereign lasted a little more than two and a half hours and included tests of the Garmin G5000 avionics with auto throttles, autopilot, engine system, aircraft systems and instrument approaches. The airplane took off and landed at Wichita, Kan., Mid-Continent Airport (ICT) where Cessna’s main manufacturing facility is located.

“The aircraft handling characteristics and performance were exceptional, just as we had anticipated after flying more than 1,300 hours in three test flight articles. The Garmin G5000 avionics system provides a sense of control and situational awareness that any pilot will appreciate,” said Matt Freund, Cessna production flight test pilot. “The new Sovereign makes a great airplane even better and continues to shows the confidence and reliability of our Citation brand — this is a terrific milestone for the new Sovereign and Cessna.”

The new Sovereign will have a range of 3,000 nm (3,452 statute miles or 5,556 km). It features improved cabin cooling, Garmin G5000 avionics with auto throttles and a new cabin management system. Winglets have been added to the new Sovereign ensuring its capability of reaching a top speed of 458kts (848 km/h) and contributing to the increased range and enabling a direct climb to 45,000 feet (13.7 km) — while still being renowned for taking off and landing on short runways.

Featuring one of the longest passenger cabins in its class and capable of seating nine people, the new Sovereign is fitted with Pratt & Whitney turbofan engines allowing for 5,852 lb of thrust. Along with a newly announced five year warranty package, the new Sovereign offers owners even greater value.

“This milestone first flight shows the heritage of the strong Citation brand is embedded in all we do instilling confidence in our customers that Cessna has, yet again, taken customer feedback and combined it with Cessna engineering and craftsmanship to make a trusted Citation aircraft even better,” said Kelly Reich, Cessna business leader for the new Citation Sovereign. “Our team designing, building and flying Cessna’s next generation of aircraft is excited today knowing our customers will soon experience the new Citation Sovereign.”

Cessna Halts Production of Entry Level Business Jets

Friday, April 19th, 2013

Article in Flying By Stephen Pope/Published: Apr 18, 2013

Amid slow sales and an $8 million first-quarter loss, Cessna will pause production of several entry-level business jet models and seek to trim its workforce, the company said yesterday.

Cessna delivered 32 jets in the quarter, down from 38 in the same period last year. Cessna parent Textron’s CEO, Scott Donnelly, noted that light jet sales remain weak as buyers seek out bargains in the used jet market and face continued uncertainty about the health of the economy.

“The light market just hasn’t recovered at this point, contrary to our expectations, and so we’re going to scale back some of the production and reduce  the number of aircraft that are out there in that space,” Donnelly said. “The demand just isn’t there.”

Cessna’s revenue rose by $39 million in the quarter, but most of that was attributed to sales of used jets. As a result of the disappointing earnings numbers, Donnelly said Cessna will continue to build light jets to a “logical point” in their production cycles “before we shut down various portions of the production line” temporarily for the Mustang, CJ2+, CJ3 and CJ4. He said Cessna will also seek workforce reductions through a “voluntary separation plan.”

Cessna saw a slight increase in sales of medium-size business jets last quarter. The Wichita manufacturer said it remains committed to its new models and is hopeful about the market’s long-term prospects. Production of the M2 and updated Sovereign and Citation X will begin later this year while deliveries of the new midsize Citation Latitude will start in 2015 and the super-midsize  Longitude in 2017.

Cessna Aircraft rolled out the first production copy of the new Citation X

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

Cessna Aircraft rolled out the first production copy of the new Citation X yesterday at its Wichita manufacturing facility, to the applause of some 200 Cessna employees. The upgraded twinjet was first announced at the 2010 NBAA Convention. At the event, CEO Scott Ernest crowned the new Citation X, with a top speed of Mach 0.935, as the fastest in-operation civilian aircraft in the world. “Speed is the reason for flight,” he explained. “It was true for Clyde Cessna in 1927. It’s true today [and] the Citation X is the perfect aircraft for customers wanting to move faster, be more efficient and get where they need to be more quickly than ever before.” The increased speed is not the only improvement for this flagship of the Citation fleet. The new Citation X provides a longer cabin and more range at 3,242 nm. Translated into practical terms it will provide a non-stop connection of such city pairs as New York-London. In the cockpit, the Garmin G5000 integrated avionics package features three 14-inch primary displays and four touch-screen controllers for data entry and systems control. Cessna expects certification later this year, with customer deliveries to start “shortly thereafter.” Monday’s rollout also adds to the buzz of new products rolling out of Wichita-based Cessna this year. The Citation X is the fourth of six such rollouts planned for this year. The other models coming off the line this year include the Grand Caravan, Citation Sovereign, the diesel-powered 182 JT-A Skylane, the Corvalis TTx, and the Citation M2.|Cessna Aircraft rolled out the first production copy of the new Citation X yesterday at its Wichita manufacturing facility, to the applause of some 200 Cessna employees. First New Citation Sovereign Rolls Out of Cessna Wichita Facility

Thursday, March 7th, 2013

Cessna Aircraft rolled out the first New Citation Sovereign yesterday from its Wichita production center. Announced in October at the NBAA Convention, the updated Sovereign attributes improved cabin cooling, Garmin G5000 avionics with autothrottles, a new cabin management system and winglets. “This rollout is evidence of Cessna’s dedication to bringing new products to consumers in 2013, and shows our sturdy financial investment in the future,” stated Kelly Reich, magnate for the New Citation Sovereign. “It’s a short turn-around from just revealing this program last fall, to currently having an airplane rolling out the door and went to the next phases of completion.” The most recent Citation will have a range of 3,000 nm and will have the ability to carry out direct climbs to 45,000 feet, thanks to the new winglets. This compares with the 2,847-nm array and 43,000-foot direct climb capacity of the initial Sovereign, which entered into service in 2004 and is equipped with Honeywell Primus Epic avionics. Top speed remains the same, at 458 knots. Certification and entry into service for the New Citation Sovereign is slated for the third quarter.
